4th Grade Guidelines

Welcome to 4th grade! I’ve provided you with information that will answer many questions and help you understand the procedures and expectations in the 4th grade. Your children have received a “student friendly” copy that they will keep in their binders.

Expectations

I expect everyone to do her or his best.

I expect everyone to be respectful toward others.

I expect everyone to support the learning environment.

General Notes

All written work will be completed with a blue or black ball point pen in cursive. Math work will be completed in pencil.

Taking Notes

All students will begin to learn the art of effective note taking. (This is a slow but worthwhile process.)

Grading

Most assignments will be graded by points. Some assignments will be for practice only and therefore will receive a check rather than points.

All assignments will be sent home; some will require a signature & will need to be returned to school. Late assignments will lose 1 point per day that it is late. After 3 days, the student will attend Thursday 4th Grade Study Hall to complete the work. (Parents will be notified if this becomes a pattern.)

Assessment

Students will be assessed at the end of a unit, chapter or project. Objective exams, writing, projects, and performance (oral) are methods used to assess student progress. Students will always know in advance when a test is approaching. Spelling tests are given weekly on Tuesdays. New units are introduced on Wednesdays.

Homework

I assign homework Monday – Thursday and occasionally on the weekend. At the end of the day, we will review homework & students will write the assignments in a homework notebook. Spelling words need to be reviewed each evening.  If your child is spending more than 45 minutes an evening on homework, please let me know.

Book Reports

Book Reports will be assigned monthly. I will provide each student with a list of recommended books for 4th grade. It is impossible to make this a comprehensive list so books not on the list will be considered but must be approved by me. The students will experience a variety of genres & reporting methods.

Mission Project

4th grade is the year we learn about the missions! This is a special unit that will include a variety of activities to help students learn about the historical and religious significance of the missions and Father Junipero Serra.

Field Trips

During the summer months I scheduled field trips related to California history. I will send a letter asking for chaperones as the date for each approaches. The dates are noted on the monthly calendar. A small fee is included for most of the field trips. These trips enhance the learning that occurs in the classroom.

Classroom Management

I take a positive approach to discipline.

Apple Awards are given to encourage appropriate behavior & to reward those who stay on task & are considerate of others. Students also earn Apple Awards through cooperative working, going above and beyond the call of duty, and supporting the learning environment. Students can “cash in” Apple Awards at the end of each quarter.

Christian values are a natural part of all aspects of the classroom.

Consequences are commensurate with the behavior.

When a child disrupts the learning environment, he or she will write on their personal behavior card. After 3 checks, he or she will serve detention. If the misbehavior continues, the student will serve detention again & will write a note to you. After the 5th time, he or she will lose Fun Friday privileges and possibly a field trip. At this point a conference will be schedule between parents, teacher & student. Each student is responsible for his or her own actions.

I will contact parents when necessary & appropriate.

While privileges are earned, individual needs are always considered.

The rules are basic & will be posted in the classroom.

Individualized instruction is ideal but not always possible or practical. Students are ability grouped for reading. When necessary in Math, students will work in small groups with our instructional aide, Ms. Katie Singer.

I am also including a 4th Grade Study Hall on Thursdays at noon where students can go for extra help.

My classroom is fairly structured, but it is an active learning environment!

Overall, my goal is to create a warm, happy environment where children are comfortable, proud, and look forward to learning!

Fun Fridays

Approximately once a month Friday is designated Fun Friday! We will do a variety of activities that reinforce the curriculum but take on game-like qualities. Surprise activities or projects will be included on occasion.

Classroom Parties

The room moms have already begun to plan a variety of special party days for the school year. We will let you know when those days are coming up.

I wish to honor each child on his or her day so you are welcome to send a treat for your child’s birthday. Please make it something that can be easily distributed at the beginning of recess. I encourage healthy snacks but I know how popular cupcakes & cookies are! Please let me know at the beginning of the week if you are sending a birthday treat. Once I have a list of birthdays, I will let you know when we will celebrate birthdays that are not on school days (summer or breaks). Weekend birthdays can be celebrated on Friday or Monday.

Parents in the Classroom

During the school year we occasionally do projects that require  additional adult assistance. When those times occur, I will ask for your help. At times when we have learned a new concept in Math, parent assistance is most appreciated! I will contact you for those times too!

Concerns

We work together to ensure a positive learning experience for your children. Please contact me immediately whenever you have concerns, we can either discuss your concerns over the phone or meet at an appropriate time. It is essential that any issues or concerns are addressed as they occur in order to avoid stress for your child or for you.
