Reading Structure Cues: (Syntactic Cues - knowing about the language) relate to the reader's knowledge of how our language is spoken and of "book language." This includes the grammar of the language, the way sentences are formed, the way sentences are linked together, and knowledge of word endings. Children learn the function of the language - noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and so on - the basic language patterns used in English. Students who use syntax are those who, come upon an unknown word, continue to read the sentence in order to know the type of the word needed, and can approximate a guess based on this information.
